Cold therapy helps to reduce these symptoms by constricting the blood vessels and reducing blood flow to the injury, as well as numbing the nerve endings, which decreases the pain messages sent to the brain.
SOME LIKE IT COLD Store the gel pack in the freezer so that it is ready for use in case of injury. The gel pack takes approximately 1 hour to freeze. After taking it out of the freezer, massage it for 3 seconds before applying it to the affected area.
SOME LIKE IT HOT Sore, stiff muscles are best treated with hot therapy because the heat helps to relax and loosen tired muscles. Heat can also be used before exercise to improve mobility by loosening muscles and increasing joint elasticity.
To heat the gel pack using a microwave, place it into the microwave for approximately 5 seconds (if the gel pack is at room temperature) or 30 seconds (if frozen). Check the temperature and heat for another 2-3 seconds if required, repeating the process until the desired temperature is reached. It is important to note that the heating time may vary depending on the wattage of the microwave, so refer to the microwave instructions and adjust the heating times accordingly. Do not heat the gel pack for longer than 2 minutes at one time, as excessive heating may cause the pack to rupture or leak.
Alternatively, you can heat the gel pack using hot water. Bring the water to a boil, carefully remove it from the heat, and immerse the gel pack for approximately 3-6 minutes. Check the temperature after 4 minutes, and return the gel pack to the water if the desired temperature has not been reached, repeating the process until the desired temperature is achieved, but do not exceed 10 minutes in the boiling water.
Regardless of whether the gel pack is used hot or cold, it is advisable to check that the temperature is not too extreme against the skin.
